DRD Spotlight - Sins n Needles

Skate name: Sins n Needles | Number: 89 | Started skating: 2009

How did you hear about Roller Derby and the DRD?

I feel like a bit of a dinosaur answering this one (gather round, kids), but I heard of it through MySpace (!) before the first Dundee league had officially formed.

What's the biggest challenge you've faced in your derby time?

Trying to fit myself into the new era of derby. It's a very different game and scene to the one I started in in 2009, more athletic, more intense, more strategic. As much as I get that it's overall a good thing for derby, as a sport, it's not as easy to play casually/recreationally any more. But I can't imagine life without at least a little bit of derby... I've been involved my whole adult life!

Do you have any bench/Line up experience?

I LUM'ed for the Colliders for a couple of seasons, around about the time when our typical roster was a whole 8 or 9 skaters, so not a whole lot of room for elaborate lineup plans, it was fun though.

Do you play any other sports?

No sports but I do like going to the gym and I do a big mix of classes; weightlifting, calisthenics, pole fitness, and boxfit.

What was your favourite subject at school?

My best subject was Maths because I'm one of those weirdos that finds it easy, but the subject I enjoyed most was Art. I then studied Photography at college but ended up in a technical job so don't really do much art now.

Most embarrassing moment in derby?

One of the very few times I was jammer in a game - I was in the penalty box between jams, when I returned to track I forgot I was the jammer and joined our wall, wondering why the other team were on me so much!

What snack do you always hope to find in the bake sale?

Jill Antonics' chocolate cheesecake brownie things, they are lush.

Tell us an interesting fact about you...

I've been to a wedding dressed as Marty McFly from Back to the Future. This was my cousins secret wedding which she disguised as her 80s fancy dress theme birthday party - it was *very* funny given some of the things people came dressed as.

What is your ice cream flavour of choice?

Raspberry Ripple!

Is there any podcast you love to listen to?

My fave at the moment is True Crime Obsessed. It's one of the few crime pods that's not all about murder. The hosts give comedic reviews of weird/ridiculous true crime documentaries, there are also some more serious ones that are not so comical but equally ludicrous.

Do you have any pets?

I have 5 snakes; a Royal Python, California Kingsnake, Cornsnake, Milksnake, and a Western Hognose.

Who do you choose for next month's DRD spotlight and why?

I choose Ruby RaGe, she's a real pillar of DRD, managing our finances, running the new skater programme and also being a fab referee!
