I want to try! How do I start?

We currently run a 20 week long New Skater Programme based off of the WFTDA New Skater Curriculum, adapted for DRD. This is for prospective skaters who want to skate recreationally, competitively or referee, there is no maximum age limit or minimum fitness requirement, and if you’ve never skated before, we can teach you!

The DRD travel teams skate under the WFTDA gender policy which is open to all those who identify as women (including cisgender, transgender and intersex women) and gender-expansive.

All of our new skater intakes are open to all gender identities and we can signpost skaters who do not align with WFTDA’s gender policy but who want to skate competitively to leagues who are Open To All or who play under the MRDA banner. All are welcome into the programme to learn the skills needed to skate as a referee, the rules to officiate and the skills to play the game!

The programme is made up for 20 weeks, within this we have 4 week blocks, split into Phases which will focus on specific areas. In between each Phase, we run level appropriate scrims for our New skaters to utilitse the skills and  gameplay knowledge that they have learned! Using this new curriculum, we are focusing on a participant-centered approach, coaching participants towards their own goals as we know that one size does not fit all! Skater development is built on the 3 pillars of Roller Derby: Skating, Gameplay, Rules and Safety!

After you have attended the New Skater Programme, skaters are encouraged to do self-assessments and discuss with the coach the goals and paths available. One of the next steps after New Skater, if you want to skate as a player, is moving to the Intermediate level where we add more Force, Speed and Complexity to the skills you learned in New Skater, and learn some new skills and tactics from DRD. If you want to become a referee after completing New Skater, our Officials help you learn the rules, terminology and how to call penalties during gameplay. And if you find that you want to explore the role of NSO, our Officials help you understand each role, the specifics of each role and how this integrates into the gameplay.

We typically do 2 intakes a year, but keep your eyes peeled for announcements on Facebook!
