DRD Spotlight - Swash N'Buckle
Skate name: Swash n'Buckle | Number: 377 | Started skating: 2019
What's the biggest challenge you've faced in your derby time? When it comes to skating backwards my left leg thinks it is on holiday and doesn’t do anything. So George and Mal came up with a cunning plan to try to help - It does not say in the rules that you have to skate in derby direction while completing the backwards lap, so I’m going to try that!
What is your favourite NSO or support role?I am most familiar with penalty box timing but I have recently started learning the paperwork for score keeping. I’m wanting to eventually be able to learn all the paperwork and roles so that I can slot into any position that needs to be filled.
Tell us an interesting fact about you! When I was growing up we had a goat called William. He got into the house one year and ate the Christmas tree. What is your favourite thing to do in Dundee? I like going to the theatre. We went to watch ‘The Tay Bridge’ show recently that was amazing and later this year we are going to watch Shrek the Musical. I cannot wait!
Three words that describe derby to you?
Empowering, challenging, exciting
What's your favourite derby memory? I loved NSOing at the Halloween scrim. The costumes were awesome and so creative. I especially liked Claire’s tube man/ wavy man costume and seeing her trying to skate in it.
Any advice for people thinking about getting involved with derby? Derby is amazing - It’s definitely worth getting involved in!
How does derby impact the rest of your life? The day after I have been skating I feel more relaxed and am more confident at work. I also find that I spend a lot of my free time thinking about Derby.
Do you have any pets?
I have a cat called Jazz. He is black with a white tummy and a white stripe on his head.
What is your ice cream flavour of choice? Blueberry cheesecake Favourite tv program atm? ‘The Goes Wrong Show’. It is so cleverly done and makes me laugh so much. I also just found out they are making a second season. Yay! Who do you choose for next month's DRD spotlight and why? I nominate Dropkick Bru's (Carol) because she know so much about the different NSO and referee positions. She is always willing to share her knowledge and answer questions even if I ask the same one multiple times.
