DRD Spotlight - Redhead Redemption
Skate name: Redhead Redemption | Number: 11 | Started skating: 2018
How did you hear about Roller Derby and the DRD?
Last year I worked Edinburgh Fringe. Whilst there, there was a roller disco run by United Sk8’s that I went to. When I got back to Dundee I was desperate to get some more time on skates. Someone I’d worked with at the Fringe, Gordon, told me there was a new intake about to start. Went to a demonstration, instantly hooked!
What's the biggest challenge you've faced in your derby time?
I feel like it’s really easy to get a mental block when you’re just starting out. For me, there was a few weeks I was coming along that I wasn’t noticing myself making any progress and I was getting really frustrated. I realised that if you just stop getting all hung up on the smaller bits, it all starts to just click.
What do you do to relax?
If I feel like I’m struggling with something new, I’ll go back to some things I’m good at, to bump my confidence back up. Either that or listening to some music and going really fast, it takes away a lot of stress.
If you could have any job in the world what would it be?
I’m quite lucky to actually be in my dream job. I’m currently apprenticing as a Tattoo Artist at Tayport Tattoo Collective. I’ve worked hard for a lot of years to get here, and couldn’t think of a better bunch of guys to be learning from.
Motivational quote?
“Pain is only temporary,” it applies quite well to derby AND tattooing!!
Favourite roller derby fb/insta/website, and why?
Though it’s not about roller derby, I love Chicks in Bowls for all the ace photography. It inspires me to get better at skating, and to really push myself to do the stuff that scares me.
What is your favourite thing to do in Dundee?
More often than not, you can find me in Starbucks on my days off, drawing and people watching, and generally catching up on stuff. Something about the place makes me a lot more productive.
Most embarrassing moment in derby?
I don’t think there’s a single instance where I’ve managed to do my 27/5 without totally decking it! Fall flat on my face every time.
How does derby impact the rest of your life?
Derby is a big escape in my life, it helps me forget the everyday for a little bit. In a couple of the worst times that I’ve had recently, I’d go to derby, stick some music on and have a couple of fast laps. It’d make everything else disappear. It’s great exercise too, and I’m much more motivated to go to it than the gym!!
Do you have any pets?
Currently, none. But in the past I’ve had rabbits, cats, a hamster, snakes, rats and, my favourite, ferrets!! Would love to have a dog in the near future.
Where is your favourite place in the world?
When I was in high school, we had a trip around Italy and visited Venice. I love the architecture, and how the whole place looks like it’s right out a story book.
Is there any podcast you love to listen too?
Sloss and Humphries on the Road, defo not for the easily offended, but full of really good banter, reminds me of some conversations I have with old friends.
Who do you choose for next month's DRD spotlight and why?
I choose Cal for the next Spotlight - she's become an awesome friend, both in and out of derby! I'm super impressed with her focus and progress since starting!
