DRD Spotlight - Slay'er

Skate name: Slay'er | Number: 112 | Time skating: 2ish years

How did you hear about Roller Derby and the DRD?

I heard about roller derby from watching Whip-It, thought it looked like an amazing sport, quick FB search and i landed on the DRD page, luckily the taster sessions were just away to begin so I signed up straight away.

What is your favourite thing in Dundee?

Probably the Uni, I moved to Dundee to start my degree and absolutely loved it! Dundee Uni changed my life and I made some amazing friends for life there.

What is your job?

I just started a new job this week, I am now a production controller for a large O&G company.

At DRD, we love to have a variety of stalls at our games ... what snack do you always hope to find in the bake sale?

A good cupcake and a caramel style cake is a winner for me.

What's the biggest challenge you've faced in your derby time?

Taking a year off while I was pregnant was tough. I had not long passed my mins and felt like I was getting to a good place with my fitness when I went on leave... so coming back was tough - my fitness was low, my pals who were at the same level as me before were now waaay advanced. It was really hard-going both mentally and physically.

What do you do to relax?

Spending time with my husband and 2 kids is the best form of relaxation for me.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, I have a black lab called Hunter and 2 cats, Fangs and Elvis. What's your favourite derby memory?

Getting my 27 in 5 when I came back after maternity was a great feeling and definitely a special memory for me Who is your derby hero?

My derby hero is G-wrecks - they were so encouraging when I was a newbie and always took the time to explain/show me different techniques. I always find their training sessions very engaging and get a lot out them. I watch them on track as a blocker and really aspire to be at that level. Whats your favourite band?

Probably Funeral for a Friend, I have loved them since i was a teenager and still listening to Casually Dressed brings back so many amazing feelings. Is there any podcast you love to listen too?

I absolutely love My Favourite Murder, it's so witty, funny and creepy! "Stay sexy and don't get murdered!"

... and finally, who do you choose for next Month's DRD Spotlight?

I choose DodGem! We started skating at the same time, passed mins together and work really well together on track! She is a skater I can rely on and I love sharing the crazy derby experience with her :)
