Skater of the Month - Angrea

NAME: Angrea

NUMBER: 247

How did you get involved with roller derby?

I was looking for something to do in my spare time and one of my pals took me along to watch a game at the DISC and I joined the next intake right after that!

Tell us about your derby name and number?

My name is Andrea so my skater name is just the angry version of that. #247 is so I could be Angrea 24/7. My favourite number is 7 or some sort of variant of that, but so is everyone elses apparently, as we have a lot of 7 based numbers in DRG!

What is your skate gear of choice?

I skate on Ridell R3’s with Zombie wheels in the pusher setup with 89A’s and 92A’s and a pair of Gumball toestops. I have a pair of Killer 187 Knee Pads and some basic Smyth knee and elbow pads. My helmet is the black S1 with silver glitter and the good ole’ Sisu mouthguard.

Before you discovered roller derby, were you involved in any other sports/exercise? If yes, how has derby impacted on this?

I had started going to the gym a few months before joining, so I kept that up when I started derby as I realised I needed to improve my cardio and I really enjoyed going to exercise classes at my gym. I still workout at least 2/3 times a week, not including derby.

What is your position of choice?

I think my position is a blocker, I need to try out the other positions more as I have only played in home teams. I do really enjoy being a jammer but it gets super tiring super quickly!

Which teams have you skated with?

The Jammin’ Dodgers at home teams, I had so much fun and everyone worked together really well.

Do you have a pre/post-bout ritual?

I was too nervous for my first game that I think I was just trying to keep busy! Afterwards, I had the best nap and ate a ridiculous amount of food.

How would you describe your derby playing style, do you have a signature move?

When I fall, Its super dramatic, got taken out the first time I jammed and slid across the floor on my belly, definitely my signature move so far.

What is your day job? How has your involvement in roller derby affected the way you live the rest of your life?

Im a Test Engineer for a company that produces lab equipment for the Telecommunication Industry. I work through in Linlithgow but live in Dundee so I have quite a commute to get home from work, so sometimes getting to training can be quite a rush! Joining derby gave me something to look forward to after work, and through it I’ve made a lot of friends and a new support system. Being able to come along to training and be among friends and get lots of encouragement and support while trying to improve my skills has made me a lot more determined try lots of different and new things.

Favourite motivational quote?

I don’t really have any motivational quotes, other that saying ‘You got this.’ In my head as I tried to smash 27 laps in 5 mins!

Who do you choose as next month’s Skater of the month?

They were absolutely amazing at home teams and they were just smashing every minimum skill thrown at them and are such a good skater and friend. Id like to nominate Jammstein for Skater of the month!
