Skater of the Month - BlackViolet

NAME BlackViolet

NUMBER N/A How did you get involved with roller derby?

I started by taking photographs of the local games, I even got a few published in Derby Magazines! One day I decided to give it a go and went through the new skater intake. Unfortunately Dundee does not have a men's team, so I decided upon the next best thing….being a ref.

Tell us about your derby name and number?

BlackViolet is my gamer tag from my geeky side, so why not use it for derby also.

What is your skate gear of choice?

Scabs and Reno’s all the way! Before you discovered roller derby, were you involved in any other sports/exercise? If yes, how has derby impacted on this?

Before derby I did a lot of rock climbing, which I still do and is one of my biggest passions. It has taken me from ice climbing in the Scottish winters to climbing in the Alps. We are just back from a trip down to the Lake District where we managed to get out climbing. Derby has actually complimented my climbing as they both give me balance, strength and flexibility. What is your position of choice? Being a ref there are so many to choose from, some of them tougher and scarier than others, but for me either OPR (Outside Pack Ref) or Jam Ref.

Who do you choose as next month’s Skater of the Month?

I am going to keep it within the ref family and nominate Quadrillion (Peta Dunkley) as my Skater of the Month, as without her words of wisdom and talents, I would not be here at all!
