Skater of the Month - ALLY-J

NAME ALLY-J

NUMBER 92

How did you get involved with roller derby?

I had seen a lot about it on facebook and saw that Katie Stott was involved with the sport! I had asked when the next intake was and came along in March of this year!

Tell us about your derby name and number?

I’d rather be called ‘Ally’ and I love my middle name (Jane) so I went for the Ali-G equivalent.

What is your skate gear of choice?

My skates are Riedell R3’s, my wheels are Presto 88s and 93s. I use 187 Killer knee pads, Anarchy elbow & wrist guards, and a Shadow helmet.

Before you discovered roller derby were you involved in any other sports/exercise, and if yes how has derby impacted on this? I have been involved with a lot of sports in the past, ten pin bowling being a huge part of my life. During this time I represented Dundee Megabowl and Scotland up until Dundee Megabowl closed. I just like to keep fit, and my job as a postie definitely does that!

What is your position of choice?

I like doing both blocking and jamming!

Which teams have you skated with?

I skated in the DRG Home Teams tournament, with my team the Press Gangsters then as part of a mixed team with the Jutes of Hazzard, and I also skated with the Bonnie Colliders at the recent ARRGmageddon game.

Do you have a pre/post-bout ritual?

Pre: continuously telling myself how nervous I am. Post: hugging every single person in sight!

How would you describe your derby playing style, do you have a signature move?

I don’t feel like I have a type of style yet, however I am trying to work on my footwork a lot to be quicker on track!

What is your day job? How has your involvement in roller derby affected the way you live the rest of your life? I am a postie! It is a tough job, especially after a few nights of training but I love it! It has had a massive positive effect on my life. 2016 has been a tough year, however coming along Dundee Roller Girls intake has been one of the best I have ever done.

Favourite motivational quote?

“Success is going from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm”

– Winston Churchill

Who do you choose as next month’s Skater of the Month?

I choose Amanda Hunter (Autopsy Turvey) – she has helped me so much in the short time of knowing her! She’s such a positive skater, awesome person to be on track with and to train with. She definitely deserves to be skater of the month!
