Skater of the Month - Alba Damned

NAME Alba Damned

NUMBER 409

How did you get involved with roller derby?

I had just moved to the States at the time and was looking at a way to meet new people. The wife of someone who worked with me suggested joining her team, the Appalachian Hellbetties.

I had to learn how to skate first, and that was hilarious!!! I was awful! Couldn’t even stand up – makes me laugh just thinking about it.

Tell us about your derby name and number?

I wanted something kind of Scottish themed and my partner helped me come up with the name. The number is a bit of a personal joke between me and my Yankee husband.

What is your skate gear of choice?

I’ve just switched out my Sure Grip skates with a standard plate for Bonts with Avenger plates. I’d never have believed it could feel so different. It’s taking a wee while to get used to though. Love my Protec pads and helmet though.

Before you discovered roller derby were you involved in any other sports/exercise, and if yes how has derby impacted on this?

No, I’ve not really been involved in any sports since leaving school. I do like beings active, so this sport is perfect for making sure I keep up my training and endurance.

What is your position of choice?

Blocker, but I really am going to try doing more jammer stuff – promise!

Which teams have you skated with?

Appalachian Hellbetties (Ohio) and the Fair City Rollers (Perth, UK) and now the DRG.

Do you have a pre/post-bout ritual?

Not really, just a bit of stretching and a few laughs.

How would you describe your derby playing style, do you have a signature move?

Ha! Chaotic! Something I need to work on if I’m honest. Not sure if it’s a signature move but I do like blocking facing backwards.

What is your day job? How has your involvement in roller derby affected the way you live the rest of your life?

I’m a self employed piercer and tattoo studio manager. One of the perks is I can wear my skates at work!

I now ogle fresh tarmac and, up ‘til now, have so far managed to resist hip checking the wheely kids in the supermarket. I’m not saying I’m jealous of their trainers or anything, but I’m pleased to see they come in my size.

Favourite motivational quote?

Can I pick two?

“Don’t stop when you’re tired, stop when you’re done” and “She thought she could, so she did”.

Who do you choose as next month’s Skater of the Month?

Although she’s not been with the league for very long, I think she’s shown real determination to getting through her mins and commitment to the league by being regular NSO at our scrims and very proficient penalty timer (!). She’ll soon be getting stuck in with the rest of us. I’d like to nominate Allyson Fraser.
