NAME: Shuggs Bunny
Tell us about your derby name.
Shuggs Bunny; I've got a pet rabbit (Apple) so I went for a play on this when I chose my ref name.
What is your skate gear of choice?
Wikko skates, Scabs knee pads and s1 helmet. I'm not a gear geek when it comes to skates, plates, and wheels but I believe if you’re gonna spend money on gear prioritise a good, well-fitting helmet. Get fitted for your helmet, not something because it’s cheap or looks good. Same goes for knee pads.
Do you have a pre/post-bout ritual?
I don't have any rituals or superstitions, I don't quite get why people get so nervous and stuff either. I get a bit chatty just before the first whistle, I think this is focus mechanism for me and prevents me from over thinking things.
How would you describe your derby style - do you have a signature move, a favourite position?
I believe that officials both on and off skates are one big team. I will fill any role that is asked from me even if that is not being involved, it's about what works best for the team. I think this is why I'm an official, it has more of an emphasis on a team regardless if you've worked with any of the crew previously.
Tell us about your favourite/most memorable experience from your time with DRG.
Early on in my officiating career when officials from other leagues were asking me directly if I was available to ref games. It may seem insignificant, but for me it was a massive boost to my confidence.
Who do you choose as next month’s Skater of the Month?
I'm would like to nominate Emma Price as Skater of the Month. For me they demonstrate what derby should be, always willing to learn and work hard. Always has a smile and is willing to help others. Emma may not pick up a new skill at the first attempt but the determination and drive demonstrated is brilliant, it's not what you can do but how hard you try. A truly valuable member of Dundee Roller Girls.
